Clear, amine-initiated polyether polyols are made by epoxidizing an amine in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide catalyst. By reducing the amount of catalyst used during the polyol synthesis and by adding the catalyst after between 5 and 30% of the total amount of at least one alkylene oxide has been added, after lactic acid neutralization, gives a short chain polyol that has foam processing characteristics similar to the conventional sulfuric acid neutralized polyol. The polyols produced in this manner are particularly useful for the production of polyurethane and polyisocyanurate foams.

L'invention concerne des polyols de polyéther clairs initiés par une amine produits par époxydation d'une amine en présence d'un catalyseur d'hydroxyde de métal alcalin. La réduction de la quantité de catalyseur utilisée pendant la synthèse du polyol suivie de l'adjonction du catalyseur représentant entre 5 et 30 % de la quantité totale d'au moins un oxyde d'alkylène produisent après neutralisation par un acide lactique, un polyol à chaîne courte présentant des caractéristiques de traitement de mousse identiques à celles des polyols neutralisés par un acide sulfurique. Les polyols produits de cette manière s'utilisent en particulier dans la production de mousses de polyuréthanne et de polyisocyanurate.
