ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method is disclosed of producing amine salts of lignosulfonates comprising the steps of ionizing the phenol content of a lignin material in alkaline liquid medium, methylolating the lignin material in the ortho position of the phenol component, lowering the pH of the liquid to the acidic range to precipitate the methylolated lignin material, washing the precipitated material with water to remove inorganic salts and residual reactants, and reacting the washed and purified methylolated lignin material with an amine compound and a sulfur- and oxygen- containing compound in liquid medium to produce a ligno- sulfonated amine salt. The products are particularly suited for use as additives in chemical compositions such as dye- stuff and pesticide formulations.
