The compounds of folmula I and II are inhibitors of the enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase and are useful in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, hyperlipoproteinemia and atherosclerosis.
