ABSTRACT A process is described for the preparation of compounds of the general formula Image and their salts, where R and R1 are independently hydrogen or lower alkyl and n is an integer from 1 to 5, wherein a ketone of formula Image where R, R1 and n are as defined above is reacted with an ammonium salt of malonic acid. If desired, a removable blocking group for the amino group is introduced. The invention also includes preparation of a derivatives of the products useful a acylating agents. The products of the process are useful as intermediates for the preparation of 6-[2-(1-aminocycloalkyl)acetamido]penicillanic acids. - 1 -
