An aminosterol compound according to formula (I) wherein R1 is a member selected from the group of: (a), wherein R6 is H or (b); (c); and (d); R2 is H or OH; R3 is H or OH; R4 is H or OH; and R5 is a C1 to C12 alkyl group, or pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof. Preferably, R5 is a C1 to C6 alkyl group, and a methyl group is particularly preferred.
