- 9 - AMMONIUM TEST ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Diammonium phosphate (DAP) and ammonium sulfate are quite commonly used in a mud system generally known as the DAP mud. The function of these products is to in- hibit shale hydration by the ammonium ions. The ammonium test utilizes the same principle known as the Nessler's ammonium test in which an alkaline potassium iodide and mercuric chloride solution is used. However, the method has been modified to accommodate much higher ammonium ion concentration and a simple color-wheel method is used to determine the color intensity of the test solution. The method is applicable to DAP concentration between 0 - 15 lbs/bbl (0 - 45 kg/m3). DAP is rarely used in higher than 12 lbs/bbl in mud systems.
