ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An improved ammunition unit for steep or high angle firing from a machine cannon is described. The total propellant charge for the projectile of the ammunition unit is formed by two or more of partial propellant charges which are mounted in the shell casing of the unit. An ignition arrangement is mounted at the bottom of the shell casing and is operatively connected to the propellant charges. Typically the ignition arrangement includes electrical leads connecting the charges independently to a voltage source. The resistance of each ignition circuit can be prearranged by adding electrical resistances to the leads so that different prescribed resistances are achieved. Thus when a normal ignition voltage is applied only one of the charges ignites and it is necessary to apply an increased voltage to ignite more than one charge. In this way the range can be selected without altering the angle of elevation of the gun barrel.
