ABSTRACT An amorphous silica suitable for use as a stabiliser for alcoholic beverages, eg beers, has a pore volume from about 1.6 to 2.5 cc g-1, a mean pore diameter from about 8.5 to 14.0 nm and a surface area of at least 450 m2g-1. The silica may be prepared by a precipitation route in which sodium silicate is mixed with mineral acid in the presence of electrolyte at a temperature of from 20°C to 50°C.
