The present disclosure relates to methods for delivering a compound to a cell comprising entrapping the compound in an amphoteric microgel wherein the microgel changes size or charge in response to environmental stimuli to entrap or release the compound, and delivering the amphoteric microgel to the cell. The disclosure further relates to a vaccine composition comprising the amphoteric microgel, and a vaccine adjuvant comprising an amphoteric microgel. The disclosure also relates to the use of a vaccine composition comprising the amphoteric microgel to deliver an antigen to an immune system cell and a use of an amphoteric microgel as an adjuvant.
