Abstract of the Disclosure There is disclosed compounds having the formula: Image wherein R and R1 represent similar or dissimilar alkyl chains of 1-22 carbon atoms, Z is a PO3 or SO3, x in an integer of 1-3, y is an integer of 1-50, t and s each individually are integers of 0.05 to 1, u and v each individually are integers of 0 to 0.95, (s+v) + (t+u) each = 1, (s+v+t+u) = 2, M is hydrogen, a metal or amine cation and A in an anion selected from the group consist- ing of halogen, sulfate and alkyl sulfate. These compounds are useful as amphoteric surface active agents, lubricants, rust and corrosion inhibitors, metal lubri- cants, cleaners, and the like.
