- 21 - AMPLIFICATION OF HTLV-I SEQUENCES FROM MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS PATIENTS ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method for diagnosing multiple sclerosis (MS) involves ampli- fication of DNA sequences present in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of MS patients. The amplification is accomplished by use of the polymerase chain reaction employing primers derived from the sequence of HTLV-I, the aetiologic agent of adult T-cell leukemia. Particularly suitable primers are derived from the gag and env regions of the proviral genome.
