29 ABSTRACT: An amplifier circuit for supplying output volt- ages which are much higher than the breakdown voltage of the individual components forming the amplifier comprises a control circuit and an amplifier stage. The amplifier stage comprises 2n transistors where n is an integer greater than one, having their main current paths serially connected between two supply terminals. The bases of the transistors are connected to tapping points on a series chain of diodes in the control circuit. Further supply sources apply an incrementally decreasing sequence of voltages to transistors so that the voltage across any of the transistors is limited to one increment of the sequ- ence of voltages. The invention may be applied to audio amplifiers or driver stages in the line circuits of tale- phony systems and allows the circuit to be realised in integrated form using a lower voltage technology.
