This invention relates to a surgical instrument for inserting acetabular cups which may also be used to maintain pressure on the cup while the bone cement is setting. The instrument consists of a rigid central rod with a hemispherical button on its forward end and a palm pad on the other. A cup retainer (100) may be slid along the rod between forward and rearward positions, and a trigger mechanism (118), associated with a hand grip (116) is provided to commence rearward motion of the cup retainer (100) from its forward position. When in its forward position, the cup retainer (100) may engage and retain an acetabular cup, as it is moved backwards, the hemispherical button holds the cup still, disengaging it from the retainer (100). The retainer (100) may then be moved to its rearward position while the cup is pressurised and excess extruded bone cement removed therefrom.
