To make a low loss connection between the cores of lens-attached fibers (13) and an optical waveguide (8) imprinted on a waveguide substrate (6), the combination of two protective gaskets (1) and (2), and supporting plates (14) is firmly pressed against the waveguide substrate (6). Grooves (5) are arrangers to align the lens-attached fibers with respect to the waveguide. The grooves are formed by the application of an associated etching procedure described in literature. The lens (7) is built by dipping the end-face of the fibers into a transparent adhesive such as sol-gel solutions followed by curing with an associated annealing process. The lens-attached ends of the fibers, which are placed in a pre-determined distance with respect to the optical waveguide, are protected by two gaskets (2) and (1), positioned below and above the fibers. The adhesive free system enables a repeatable and reproducible translational alignment and is independent of the nature of the optical waveguide. The disclosed packaging method also achieves a precise vertical alignment of fiber core and waveguide. The whole assembly is held together and packaged by the tightening force of two outer most plates (17) and (22). Finally, the inexpensive packaging method can be assembled and disassembled for repeated use, as many times as necessary.
