The invention relates to the application of the techniques of nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) to ultrasensitive mass detection. A pulsed flux of atoms is adsorbed onto the surface of a 32.8 MHz nanomechanical resonator (10) within an ultrahigh vacuum environment. The mass-induced frequency shifts from these adsorbates are then used to demonstrate a mass sensitivity of .sim.1.46x106 Daltons (Da). For resonators (10) operating up to frequencies of 72 MHz, inverse mass responsivities as small as .sim.8x10-20 grams/Hz (5x104 Da/Hz) are obtained. Our results offer a new approach to ultrahigh resolution mass spectrometry of individual, electrically-neutral macromolecules with clear prospects for single Dalton sensitivity.

L'invention se rapporte à l'application de techniques de systèmes nano-électromécaniques (NEMS) dans la détection de masse ultrasensible. Un flux pulsé d'atomes est absorbé sur la surface d'un résonateur nano-mécanique de 32,8 MHz à l'intérieur d'un environnement ultravide. Les changements de fréquence induite par masse de ces absorbants servent ensuite à montrer la sensibilité de masse de .sim.1,46x10?6¿ Daltons (Da). Pour ce qui est des résonateurs fonctionnant à des fréquences allant jusqu'à 72 MHz, des sensibilités de masse aussi faibles que .sim.8x10?20¿ grammes/Hz (5x10?4¿ Da/Hz) sont obtenues. Nos résultats offrent une nouvelle approche de la spectrométrie de masse à très haute résolution de macromolécules individuelles électriquement neutres avec des perspectives nettes concernant la simple sensibilité Dalton.
