A cryogenic fluid jet is used in an apparatus and a method for remote cooling of a cutting tool engaged in machining a workpiece under high-energy conditions, such as high-speed machining, hard-turning, cutting of difficult to machine materials, and combinations thereof. The apparatus and method use a stabilized, free-expanding cryogenic fluid jet having a pulse cycle time less than or equal to about 10 seconds. The apparatus and method increase the cleanliness of machined parts and chips and machining productivity of hard but brittle tools, including but not limited to tools which should not be cooled with conventional cooling fluids.
Selon l'invention, un jet de fluide cryog~nique est utilis~ dans un appareil et dans un proc~d~ afin de refroidir ~ distance un outil de d~coupe engag~ dans l'usinage d'une pice dans des conditions d'~nergie ~lev~e, telles qu'usinage ~ haute vitesse, tournage difficile, d~coupe de mat~riaux difficiles ~ usiner, et des combinaisons de ces op~rations. L'appareil et le proc~d~ utilisent un jet de fluide cryog~nique stabilis~, ~ expansion libre, dont la dur~e de cycle d'impulsion est inf~rieure ou ~gale ~ 10 secondes environ. L'appareil et le proc~d~ permettent d'augmenter la propret~ des parties usin~es et des copeaux ainsi que la productivit~ d'usinage d'outils durs sauf cassants, et aussi d'outils qui ne devraient pas Útre refroidis ~ l'aide de fluides de refroidissement classiques.
