A method and apparatus for an application aware traffic shaping service node positioned between the access and core networks is described. One embodiment of the invention enforces a per subscriber, per application traffic policy for network traffic between one or more subscribers communicatively connected through an access network and a set of one or more service providers communicatively connected through a core network. According to another embodiment of the invention enforcement of the per subscriber, per application traffic policy comprises classifying the network traffic into application level subscriber flows, maintaining real-time statistics on the application level subscriber flows and overall network element congestion, updating, in real-time, the per subscriber, per application traffic policy based on the real-time statistics and restricting bandwidth and dropping packets on the application level subscriber flows as necessary to enforce the per subscriber, per application traffic policy. Another embodiment of the invention is a passthrough mode where the data traffic is transmitted by the traffic in the same manner as received by the traffic shaping service node. Yet another embodiment of the invention is a combined service node with integral edge routing and traffic aggregator.
La présente invention concerne un procédé et un appareil destinés à un noeud de service de lissage du trafic informé de l'application positionné entre le réseau d'accès et le réseau central. Une forme de réalisation de l'invention applique une politique du trafic par abonné et par application pour le trafic réseau entre un ou plusieurs abonnés reliés en mode communication par l'intermédiaire d'un réseau d'accès et d'un ensemble formé d'au moins un fournisseur de services relié en mode communication par l'intermédiaire d'un réseau central. Selon une autre forme de réalisation de l'invention, l'application de la politique du trafic par abonné et par application consiste à classifier le trafic réseau sous forme de flux d'abonnés du niveau application, à maintenir à jour des statistiques en temps réel relatives aux flux d'abonnés du niveau application et à l'encombrement global de l'élément réseau, à actualiser, en temps réel, la politique du trafic par abonné et par application sur la base des statistiques en temps réel et à limiter la largeur de bande puis à larguer des paquets sur les flux d'abonnés du niveau application, autant que nécessaire, pour appliquer la politique du trafic par abonné et par application. Une autre forme de réalisation de l'invention est un mode passe-système dans lequel le trafic de données est transmis par le trafic de la même manière qu'il est reçu par le noeud de service de lissage du trafic. Une dernière forme de réalisation de cette invention est un noeud de service combiné comprenant un acheminement de bordure intégré et un aggrégateur de trafic.
