An edge-lit illumination system comprising a light transmitting sheet (10) which has a surface treatment, capable of reflecting or scattering light, on at least one of its opposing surfaces (11, 12), a light source (13) positioned in proximity to, and adjacent to, an edge of this sheet, and a reflective surface (14) positioned adjacent to an edge of the sheet, at an obtuse angle (18) to the plane of the sheet and extending away from one surface of the sheet. The reflective surface is preferably disposed adjacent to the edge of the light transmitting sheet having the light source adjacent to it. The obtuse angle preferably ranges from 100 to 145 degrees. This invention gives an increase in the area of illumination across the light transmitting sheet.

Ce système d'éclairage par la tranche comprend une feuille (10) de transmission de lumière présentant une surface pouvant réfléchir ou diffuser la lumière sur au moins une de ses surfaces opposées (11, 12), une source lumineuse (13) placée à proximité d'un bord de cette feuille, ou adjacente à ce bord, ainsi qu'une surface de réflexion (14), laquelle est adjacente à un bord de la feuille de manière à former un angle obtus (18) avec le plan de la feuille et s'étend en s'éloignant d'une surface de la feuille. La surface de réflexion est préférablement adjacente au bord de la feuille de transmission de lumière à proximité duquel se situe la source lumineuse. De préférence, l'angle obtus est compris entre 100 et 145 degrés. L'invention permet d'augmenter la zone d'éclairage à travers la feuille de transmission de lumière.
