An electric vacuum cleaner includes an engaging mechanism disposed in the appliance housing for detachably engaging a dust collecting bag for collecting dust, dirt and the like. It further includes a releasing lever, integrally connected to the engaging mechanism, for permitting a releasing operation to take place from the outside of the vacuum cleaner to free the engaged state of the dust collecting bag from the engaging mechanism.
