An electrode for a rechargeable lithium battery, which is high in discharge capacity and excellent in cycle characteristics, comprising a layer composed of a metal that does not alloy with Li, a layer composed of a metal that alloys with Li and a mixed layer interposed between the layers and composed of these metals. The mixed layer includes first and second layers having different A:B concentration ratios.
