A prefabricated element for cladding building walls comprises a base body, on whose front side a covering layer of thin flexible material is applied. The covering layer projects on one side past the base body and forms a projecting covering strip, which in the position of use covers over the joint with the next cladding element and is bonded on same. On the rear side of the covering strip a holding rib is present and functionally adjacent to the opposite side of the cladding element a trough-like recess is present. The holding rib and the trough-like recess run parallel to one another and to the respective sides of the cladding element and are so designed and so arranged that in the position of use the holding rib fits into the trough-like recess of the adjoining cladding element.
