A wireless data communication system has a first station or mobile unit is linked to a second station configured as an access unit to support packet communication, voice or data, where the voice packets are transmitted in the Continuously Aware Mode (CAM) mode while other packets are buffered by the access point and held until asked for by the first station when in a Power Saving-Poll (PSP) mode. A monitoring apparatus at the access point monitors all transmitted packets and sorts the packets to the mobile unit according to CAM or PSP mode. Voice packets are sent out immediately to the mobile unit. Other packets are stored at the access point. The packet arrival rate may vary during transmission and due to random packet delays introduced by propagation characteristic and processing apparatus. The packet arrival rate and delays are taken into account by the first station in an algorithm to determine and extend the normal safe period in which the station receiver may be powered off.
Un système de communication de données sans fil comporte une première station ou unité mobile reliée à une seconde station configurée comme unité d'accès pour prendre en charge la communication de paquets, la voix ou les données, les paquets de données de voix étant transmis en mode CAM (Continuously Aware Mode), les autres paquets étant stockés en mémoire tampon par le point d'accès et conservés jusqu'à ce que la première station les demande quand elle est en mode PSP (Power Saving-Poll). Un appareil de contrôle du point d'accès contrôle tous les paquets transmis et trie les paquets à destination de l'unité mobile selon le mode CAM ou PSP. Les paquets de données vocales sont immédiatement envoyés vers l'unité mobile. Les autres paquets sont stockés au point d'accès. Le débit d'arrivée des paquets peut varier pendant la transmission et du fait de retards aléatoires des paquets causés par les caractéristiques de propagation et l'appareil de traitement. Le débit d'arrivée des paquets et les retards sont pris en compte par la première station selon un algorithme pour déterminer et prolonger la période sûre normale pendant laquelle le récepteur de la station peut être éteint.
