A high conversion of biomass, such as wood, sawdust, bark, or agricultural wastes, to liquids is obtained by pyrolysis at short reaction times in a reactor capable of high heat transfer rates; the reactor being of the fluidized bed, circulating fluidized bed or transport type in which the conveying gas contains low and carefully controlled amounts of oxygen, allowing a reaction system with tow concentrations of carbon monoxide or flammable gases with a resulting improvement in operating safety and potential improvement in thermal efficiency and capital costs. The oxidation steps may be carried out in one or two stages. The resulting liquid product may be used as an alternative liquid fuel or as a source of high-value chemicals.
Transformation à rendement élevé en liquides d'une biomasse telle que du bois, des sciures, de l'écorce ou des déchets agricoles, cette transformation étant réalisée par pyrolyse rapide dans un réacteur permettant d'obtenir des taux élevés de transfert thermique, et étant du type à lit fluidisé, à lit fluidisé circulant ou à transport, dans lequel le gaz véhicule renferme des quantités faibles et soigneusement régulées d'oxygène, de manière à obtenir un système réactionnel à faibles concentrations de monoxyde de carbone ou de gaz inflammables, ce qui améliore la sécurité d'exploitation et permet éventuellement d'améliorer le rendement thermique et de réduire les frais d'investissement. Les opérations d'oxydation peuvent s'effectuer en une ou deux étapes. Le produit liquide obtenu peut servir de combustible liquide de substitution ou de source de produits chimiques de grande valeur.
