A burner (40) having a transition zone (46) to act as a buffer between the primary zone (42) and the secondary zones (48, 50). The transition zone (46) allows improved control of near-burner mixing and flame stability by providing limited recirculation regions between the primary zone (42) and the secondary zones (48, 50). These limited recirculation regions transport evolved NO x back towards an oxygen-lean pyrolysis zone near the burner exit (52) for reduction to molecular nitrogen, thus decreasing emissions and unburned fuel losses.
