An electrolyzer comprises an electrolytic cell having an anode and a cathode catalyst, an ion exchange membrane therebetween, and an anode and a cathode flow field. The anode flow field comprises: a rolled, expanded metal sheet contacting a first metal sheet bipolar plate or an anode current collector and a porous metal substrate contacting an opposite side of the rolled, expanded metal sheet and having the anode catalyst deposited on an opposite side. The cathode flow field comprises: a rolled, expanded metal sheet contacting a second metal sheet bipolar plate or a cathode current collector, a rigid, perforated stainless steel sheet and a sheet of compressible stainless steel felt or wool. The perforated sheet contacts a second side of the rolled, expanded metal sheet. The compressible sheet contacts an opposite side of the rigid, perforated stainless steel sheet and the cathode catalyst on an opposite side.
