A engine preheat system and method of controlling same are provided. The preheat system supplies heat reserving hot water stored in a heat accumulating device to an engine prior to starting the engine. An electronic control unit (ECU) of an engine system starts the preheat operation. The ECU also determines a preheat finish time on the basis of a cooling water temperature of the engine so as to start the engine after preheating of the engine is reliably finished. Further, during the execution of the preheat, a lamp is turned on to indicate execution of the preheat to a driver. When the preheat is completed, the ECU automatically starts the engine.
