An optical switch comprises a dual-core optical fibre coupler having waveguides (4 and 6) which are erbium doped, silica-based fibre amplifiers. The waveguides (4 and 6) are pumped by pump lasers (18 and 20) which are used to control the mean differential gain of the waveguides to be zero or a first value at which two values the linear coupler is a crosscoupler or a through-coupler at an operating wavelength (.lambda.1).

Un commutateur optique comporte un coupleur à fibre optique à double coeur possédant des guides d'ondes (4 et 6) qui sont des amplicateurs de fibres à base de silice dopés à l'erbium. Les guides d'ondes (4 et 6) sont pompés par des lasers de pompage (18 et 20) utilisés pour ajuster le gain différentiel moyen des guides d'ondes à une valeur égale à zéro ou à une première valeur; à ces deux valeurs, le coupleur linéaire est un coupleur transversal à une longueur d'onde de fonctionnement (lambda1).
