An anaerobic process uses a continuous oscillatory flow reactor (1) having a reaction tube with baffles (7) along its length. Fluid material is introduced into the tube through a circulating loop (41) and control valve (28) configuration. The fluid comprises the following components: a finely divided substrate material,e.g. of ground straw, and facultative and/or obligate anaerobic organisms such as rumen organisms. The fluid material passes through the tube at a speed that allows anaerobic fermentation to take place, and is caused to oscillate with respect to the baffles. The microbial biomass, extra-cellular enzymes and liquid and gaseous fermentation end-products can be collected at outlets (5, 9). The oscillating- f low system can be used to grow obligately anaerobic microorganisms and is ideal for fermentation processes because of its thorough mixing at low shear force and controllable conditions. In it rumen processes in particular can be run, resulting in a much faster digestion than in conventional anaerobic digesters.

Un matériau fluide est introduit dans le tube par une configuration comportant une boucle (41) de circulation et une vanne (28) de régulation. Le fluide comprend les composants suivants : un matériau de substrat finement divisé, par ex. de la paille hachée, et des organismes anaérobies facultatifs et / ou obligatoires tels que des organismes de panse. Le matériau fluide parcourt le tube à une vitesse qui permet à la fermentation anaérobie d'avoir lieu, et il est animé d'oscillations par rapport aux chicanes. La biomasse microbienne, les enzymes extracellulaires et les produits de fermentation liquides et gazeux peuvent être collectés au niveau de sorties (5, 9). Le système à écoulement oscillant peut être utilisé pour la culture de microorganismes anaérobies obligatoires et est idéal pour les processus de fermentation en raison de son brassage poussé avec une force de cisaillement faible et dans des conditions contrôlables. Des processus de panse peuvent en particulier y être réalisés, donnant une digestion beaucoup plus rapide que dans les digesteurs anaérobies conventionnels.
