ABSTRACT OF THE INVENTION A newly discovered thermophilic anaerobe is described that was isolated in a biologically pure culture and designated Thermoanaeobacter ethanolicus ATCC 31550. T. Ethanolicus is cultured in aqueous nutrient medium under anaerobic, thermophilic conditions and is used in a novel process for producing ethanol by subjecting carbohydrates, particularly the saccahrides, to Fermentation action of the new microorganism in a biologically pure culture.
