The composition comprises a combination of nitroglycerin and sucralfate, and may further comprise lidocaine. The composition may be included in a petrolatum base along with a water soluble lubricant. These compositions have been found effective in treating painful conditions in the anal region such as anal fissure, inflamed or recently thrombosed hemorrhoids, ligation of internal hemorrhoids or of the chronic anal pains.
