Narcotic analgetic compositions consisting of the compound 1-(2-phenylethyl)-3-methyl-4-(N-propananilido) piperidine, and said compound in admixture with a non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable carrier. A method for raising the threshold of pain in mammals comprising administering a therapeutically effective concentration of 1-(2-phenylethyl)-3-methyl-4-(N-propananilido) piperidine preferably in admixture with a non-toxic pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
