ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for reducing unmasked quantizing noise modulation in adapting differential digital coding systems is disclosed. In the digital encoder low frequency signals are boosted in the presence of dominating high frequency signals that are controlling the quantizing step size. In the deoder, complementary cutting of low frequency signals is provided. In addition unmasked high frequency noise modulation is reduced by the use of variable pre- and de-emphasis.
