The heater comprises a heater element (182) supported (192) in heat conducting relationship to the blood, blood fraction or control (514) when the instrument (100) is in use. The temperature of the heater element support (192) is monitored (188). The heater control (322) comprises a first temperature setpoint control (428) and a second temperature setpoint control (SETPoinT 2). The heater control (322) is coupled to the heater element support monitor (188), and the heater element (182) is coupled to the heater control (322) to be controlled thereby.
