A method for detecting the presence of a degenerative brain disease such as BSE or CJD. A measurement is made of the respiratory sinus arrhythmia of any mammal which is suspected of suffering from the degenerative brain disease. It is assumed that the mammal is suffering from such a disease if the measured RSA is outside a predetermined reference range. The reference range may be determined from data which forms the basis for the calculation of the RSA range by applying a suitable test for randomness.

L'invention se rapporte à un procédé pour détecter la présence de maladies dégénératives des fonctions cérébrales, telles que l'ESB ou la maladie de Creutzfeldt-Jakob. On pratique une mesure de l'arythmie respiratoire d'un mammifère supposé souffrir d'une maladie dégénérative des fonctions cérébrales. On estime que ce mammifère souffre d'une telle maladie si l'arythmie respiratoire mesurée se situe en dehors de valeurs de référence prédéterminées. Ces valeurs de référence sont déterminées à partir de données constituant la base du calcul des valeurs de l'arythmie respiratoire, auxquelles on applique un facteur de correction qui tient compte du hasard.
