ABSTRACT Analytical Equipment and Sensor Electrodes Therefor. The invention relates to the manufacture and use of sensor electrodes, in combination with reference electrodes and apparatus utilising such electrodes. Known sensors comprise a conductive electrode coated with a catalytically active enzyme and a mediator compound, for contact with a substrate containing a analyte for which the enzyme exerts a catalytic effect, whereby the mediator transfers charge to or from the electrode to give a readout signal. The present invention provides electrodes comprising: an area of first electrode material comprising an enzyme and a mediator compound adjacent to but non-contiguous with an area of reference electrode material: both electrodes being of small dimension, and extending as or supported on an elongate member to facilitate manipulation before or during contact with live tissue or a small withdrawn sample of body fluid to assay for an analyte in the tissue or sample.
