ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A substantially load-free anchor lock rail fastening assembly is provided herein. It includes an anchor lock and a rail anchor. The anchor lock is adapted to form a part of a plate or attachment to a railroad cross tie or rail support. The anchor lock is provided with cooperating abutment means for providing a loose connection with the rail anchor. The rail anchor is unitary and is provided with cooperating engaging portions disposed thereon. The en- gaging portions loosely engage the abutment means, thereby loosely engaging the anchor locks. This enables the rail anchor to control both the vertical and the longitudinal positions of the rail without exerting compressive forces between the rail and the rail support, such substantially load free fastening of the rail leaving the rail free to float. This cooperation permits limited vertical movement between the floating rail and the railroad cross tie.
