An anchoring retainer (10) for receiving threaded fasteners (46) has a generallycylindrical unitary body (12) with a longitudinal axis (14) and an axial cavity (16) extending therealong with a pair of axial ends. An inner head portion (18) at one axial end has thread engaging means (20) disposed in the axial cavity (16) therein. An outer portion (22) positioned at the other axial end has retention means (24) for limiting axial travel of the retainer (10). A middle portion (28) disposed between the inner head portion (18) and the outer portion (22) has a plurality of legs (32) surrounding the axial cavity (16) which are separated by longitudinally intending circumferentially spaced slots (30). The legs (32) have hinges (34, 36) connecting them to the inner head portion (18) and the outer portion (22). Legs (32) also have a mid-section hinge (38) dividing the legs (32) into inner and outer sub-sections (40, 42) wherein the inner sub-section (40) is longer than the outer sub- section (42).
