The invention relates to an ancient defense polymer having biological activity. The polymer comprises both discrete hydrophilic blocks containing cationic charge(s) and discrete hydrophobic blocks, making it amphipathic and antimicrobial in a manner analogous to natural antimicrobial peptides that form an ancient defense mechanism employed by many organisms. Such a polymer may be formed into devices designed to resist infection or bound to the surface of an apparatus to lend the biological activity to the surface of the apparatus.

L'invention a trait à un polymère à défense ancienne possédant une activité biologique. Le polymère selon l'invention contient aussi bien des blocs hydrophiles discrets renfermant une ou plusieurs charges cationiques que des blocs hydrophobes discrets, ce qui le rend amphipatique et antimicrobien de manière analogue aux peptides antimicrobiens naturels qui forment un mécanisme de défense ancienne utilisé par de nombreux organismes. Un tel polymère peut servir à former des dispositifs conçus pour résister aux infections, ou être lié à la surface d'un appareil afin d'impartir l'activité biologique à la surface de l'appareil.
