An animal control apparatus which includes a conductive barrier and a self contained power source. A switching circuit is provided which couples the power source with the conductive barrier. The switching circuit includes an energizing switch for supplying power from the power source to the conductive barrier. The energizing switch is activated by a proximity sensor upon the proximity of an animal being sensed. The animal coming in contact with the conductive barrier receives a non-lethal shock. A timer is provided for deactivating the energizing switch to disconnect the conductive barrier from the power source upon a preset time interval having elapsed.
