Apparatus and a method for monitoring animal exhalation, to provide an indication of the condition of an animal is disclosed. Apparatus for collection and temporary or permanent storage of animal exhalation sample is disclosed, together with apparatus for conditioning a sample prior to analysis. A method of conditioning a sample prior to analysis is also disclosed. Use may be made of the above mentioned apparatus and method in the diagnosis of the condition of an animal. Conditions of interest include metabolic conditions of animals such as dairy cattle; these can be monitored by measuring analytes in the exhaled breath, emanations from the milk or both. Use may also be made of said apparatus and method in the detection of antibodies present in samples of blood, milk and mucus particulates in exhaled breath. It is preferred that the monitoring apparatus is portable.
On décrit un appareil ainsi qu'un procédé destinés à contrôler l'exhalation animale et à fournir des indications sur l'état d'un animal. On décrit notamment un appareil destiné à collecter et à conserver de manière temporaire ou permanente un échantillon d'exhalation animale, de même qu'un appareil servant à conditionner un échantillon préalablement à l'analyse de celui-ci. On décrit également un procédé de conditionnement d'un échantillon avant analyse de celui-ci. On peut utiliser l'appareil et le procédé ci-dessus mentionnés dans le diagnostic de l'état d'un animal. Il est intéressant de connaître notamment l'état du métabolisme d'animaux, tels que les animaux laitiers; on peut contrôler cet état par mesure d'analytes se trouvant dans l'haleine exhalée, par mesure d'émanations provenant du lait, ou par mesure des deux. On peut également utiliser cet appareil et ce procédé dans la détection d'anticorps présents dans des échantillons de sang, de lait et de particules de mucus se trouvant dans l'haleine exhalée. De préférence, cet appareil de contrôle est portatif.
