An extension of the use of colorimetric indicators in clumping litter is to utilize indicators as a visual confirmation that the litter has become soiled. However, all clumping animal litter is susceptible to some degree of crumbling. Since it is the crumbling of a clump that allows soiled litter to remain and propagate malodors, attaching an indicator that undergoes a color change informs the litter user that it is time to change the litter.
