Process for the preparation of a polymer by the polymerization of: (A) from 50 to 100 percent by weight of at least one diene monomer, (B) from 0 to 50 percent by weight of at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer, the above polymerization being carried out in an inert solvent in the presence of a catalytic system which comprises: (a) at least one anionic initiator essentially consist- ing of a Lithium derivative, (b) at least one modifier belonging to the group of tetrahydropyranyl ethers.
