A process for preparing polymers by (co)polymerizing with an anionic initiator in an extruder a monomer feed comprising one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds, wherein the monomer feed contains at least 50 %by weight of one or more ethylenically unsaturated compounds based on the total weight of monomer feed, the temperature of the reaction mixture is allowed to increase in the flow direction to temperatures in the range of 150 to 300 °C, and the residence time of the reaction mixture in the reaction zone of the extruder is less than 5 minutes; and the polymers so pre- pared.
