A method is disclosed for improving the chemical and mechanical durability of a low emissivity coated article comprising a substrate and a low emissivity coating comprising successive layers of an antireflective metal oxide, an infrared reflective metal, a metal primer and an antireflective metal oxide. The method comprises heating the coated article at a temperature below the strain point of the substrate for a sufficient time and at a sufficient temperature to anneal the coating to reduce structural defects and chemical reactions. Since the temperature is maintained below the strain point of the substrate, annealing the coating to improve its chemical and mechanical durability does not introduce permanent stresses into the substrate, typically glass.
