The present invention relates to the field of diagnosis and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, ischemic events, and central nervous system injury, and provides compositions and methods for alleviation or reduction of the symptoms and signs associated with damaged neuronal tissues whether resulting from tissue trauma, or from chronic or acute degenerative changes. The present invention in particular relates to the discovery that the expression of Annexin II is involved in apoptosis induced by oxidative stress, and that anti-sense Annexin II RNA and Annexin II siRNA protected the cells from this apoptosis. Thus Annexin II inhibitors prevent the damage caused by said ischemic event.

L'invention concerne le domaine du diagnostic et du traitement de maladies neurodégénératives, d'événements ischémiques et de lésions du système nerveux central. Elle concerne, plus particulièrement, des compositions et des méthodes servant à soulager ou à limiter les symptômes et les signes associés à la détérioration de tissus neuronaux provenant soit d'un traumatisme tissulaire, soit de modifications dégénératives chroniques ou aiguës. Elle concerne, plus particulièrement, la découverte portant sur le rôle joué par l'expression d'annexine II dans l'apoptose induite par le stress oxydatif et sur la protection des cellules contre cette apoptose par l'ARN d'annexine II antisens et de l'ARNsi d'annexine II. Les inhibiteurs d'annexine II empêchent, de ce fait, la détérioration provoquée par ledit élément ischémique.
