An annular seal, in which a sealing lip of elastomeric material is pressed by elastic tension onto the cylindrical surface of a shaft. The cylindrical surface incorporates indentations which have concave lower parts. The maximum depth of the indentations amounts to 4-12 micrometers, and in the area of its total outer periphery each indentation is enclosed by the lower parts of adjacent indentations. The intervals between the centre points of the indentations are so small that the adjacent ones define each other at their intersecting edges.
