A B S T R A C T Carbon losses are reduced in that an operative anode carbon is glued under a carbon core in an inert anode top. The operative anode carbon is almost completely consumed. The anode top is then cleaned and a new operative carbon is glued to its underside. The core carries a protective layer, except at the lower surface.
