The invention related to a platinum/ruthenium alloy catalyst that comprises finely-dispersed alloy particles on a powdery, electrically-conductive carrier material, methods of making it, and its use in fuel cells having a polymer electrolyte membrane. The catalyst is particularly resistant to carbon monoxide poisoning when the alloy particles display mean crystallite sizes of 0.5 to 2 nm.
