-13- ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An electrochemical cell having an alkaline metal anode, a cathode, an electrolyte and an anode neutralizing agent consisting of an inorganic solid positioned adjacent to the anode. The agent is nonreactive with all cell chemicals below a predetermined temperature near the melting point of the anode. At the predetermined temperature, the agent and anode enter into endothermic or at most mildly exothermic reaction.
