ABSTRACT This invention provides a hand-held radio transmitter antenna which is designed to reduce or minimize radiation to the head of the user and which may be readily incorporated into existing hand-held communication units. The hand-held radio transmitter device which in use is held in a proximity to the head of a user, has a housing having a transmitter therein, the housing having a side wall for placing adjacent the user's head in use, an electrically conductive ground plane operatively connected to the transmitter, the ground plane being disposed on a side of the side wall which is placed adjacent the user's head in use and an antenna element operatively associated with the ground plane and the transmitter and arranged toradiate away from the user's head in use thereby minimizing radiation to the head of the user in use.
